Passive Voice Overview

The passive voice is used when the focus is on the action itself rather than on the performer. This is particularly helpful when the doer is unknown or irrelevant.

Example: My bike was stolen.

Here, the emphasis is on the theft, not on who stole the bike.

Passive for Politeness

Passive constructions can make statements sound more polite, avoiding direct blame.

Example: A mistake was made.

This focuses on the error itself, not on assigning responsibility (as in You made a mistake).

Passive Voice Structure

The passive structure is formed by:
Subject + finite form of “to be” + Past Participle

Example: A letter was written.

When transforming active sentences into passive, keep in mind:

  1. The object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence.
  2. The verb changes form (to be + past participle).
  3. The subject of the active sentence becomes an optional by-phrase or is omitted.

Passive with Two Objects

Passive Option 1: A letter was written to me by Ali.

Passive Option 2: I was written a letter by Ali.

Note: The by Ali phrase is often omitted if it’s not crucial to the meaning.

Personal and Impersonal Passive

Personal Passive uses the object of the active sentence as the subject of the passive sentence.
Example: They build houses becomes Houses are built.

Impersonal Passive can be used with verbs of perception like say, think, and know.
Example: They say that women live longer than men.

  • Impersonal Passive: It is said that women live longer than men.
  • Personal Passive: Women are said to live longer than men.

In English, personal passive is generally preferred over impersonal passive.
